Back in 1946 famous artist Salvador Dali and famed animator Walt Disney began work on an animated short entitled “Destino”. The project was shut down due to financial reasons and rumored to be shut down because of extreme content. In 2003 the animation was complete by a group of Disney animators but was only shown to few people at certain film festivals. Alas now a copy has been uploaded to the internet and we can finally see one of the most intriguing animations from our time (remember this was initially made in 1946). Salvador Dali’s surrealist style can clearly be seen in the animation.
“I had become interested in the idea of characters that were less referential and more iconic and abstract. I particularly wanted to do something with a potato-headed stick-man that I had been drawing at that time.
The film was inspired by certain personal experiences in running – a favourite run over Blanchland moor in Northumberland, being attacked by a crow in Singapore – and also by the transcendent, almost psychedelic experience of the simple act of running.
Rather than a marketing project inititated by Nike, the film was something proposed and produced by myself, and as such I hope represents a much more equal collaboration with a brand.†– James Jarvis
So at the end of February I’m off to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil to do a two month internship- I thought it might be good to investigate the Brazilian design world and doing so lead me to NANDO COSTA. If you need to get some design and illustration inspiration, here’s a website to check out.
